Essential Miami Yacht Charter Checklists

A day on the water is vastly improved by smart preparation. Unlike hotels or land venues, once a yacht leaves the marina slip, there is no corner store. Below are our practical checklists compiled for Biscayne Bay charterers.

1. What to Bring: The Essentials Checklist

  • Physical ID: Every adult passenger must carry government-issued photo identification for marina check-in.
  • Cash for Gratuity & Captain: Standard 15%–20% crew tip and any dockside captain fees are settled in cash at the dock.
  • Reef-Safe Sunscreen: Avoid spray sunscreens on board—spray oils stain white marine vinyl and make fiberglass decks hazardous.
  • Boat Shoes or Barefoot: Yacht etiquette requires bare feet or non-marking deck shoes while aboard. Dark-soled shoes are strictly banned.
  • Dry Bag for Electronics: Keep phones, portable chargers, and cameras protected from spray and water-toy splashes.

2. Sandbar & Raft-Up Essentials (Haulover / Nixon Beach)

  • Water Shoes / Booties: Sandbars feature shell fragments and occasional sea urchins. Water shoes make wading comfortable.
  • Canned Beverages: Many operators ban glass bottles on deck to prevent broken glass in barefoot swimming zones.
  • Water & Hydration: Plan on at least 2–3 bottles of fresh water per person alongside any alcoholic beverages.
  • Waterproof Floating Pouch: If wading over to food vendor boats or neighboring raft-ups, carry cash in a floating pouch.

3. The 10-Minute Pre-Departure Briefing

Arrive at the marina slip 20 to 30 minutes prior to contracted departure. Bridges open on fixed schedules, and your charter clock begins at the reserved time. Your captain will review life jacket stowage, emergency procedures, and marine toilet (head) usage. Note that marine heads cannot handle paper towels or hygiene products.
