Detailed Vessel Classifications

Real specs, practical trade-offs, and live example yachts for each major charter category in Miami. Classes are assigned from the listing data by one rule: vessels licensed for more than 13 guests count as large-group; cat builders (Leopard, Sunreef, Fountaine Pajot, Power Cat) count as catamarans; open day-boat builders (Intrepid, Saxdor, VanDutch, Capelli, Tesoro, Bluegame, Vanquish) count as day boats; everything else is a motor yacht or cruiser. One honest gap: this fleet has no pontoon boats at all, so there is no pontoon section. Pontoons exist on other Miami platforms, just not here.

Planing & Flybridge Hulls · 88 in this fleet

Motor Yachts & Cruisers

Planing motor yachts are the core of Miami's private charter fleet. Air-conditioned salons, flybridge decks and bow sunpads, with quick runs between Downtown, Star Island and the sandbars. Best for groups up to 12 who want the classic yacht layout.

Pros
  • Highest speed between Biscayne Bay destinations
  • Air-conditioned interior salon for escaping midday heat
  • Elevated flybridge deck provides 360-degree skyline views
Cons
  • Higher fuel consumption when cruising on plane
  • Narrower beam rolls more in cross-wakes at anchor than catamarans

Dual Hull Stability · Wide Deck Beam · 9 in this fleet

Catamarans (Power & Sail)

Two hulls, spaced wide apart, so the boat sits flat at anchor and carries a much wider deck than a monohull of the same length. Forward trampolines and shaded aft cockpits suit groups that plan to spend the day anchored and swimming. Shallow draft helps around the bay's flats.

Pros
  • Exceptional stability at anchor with minimal wake roll
  • Significantly lower fuel consumption than high-speed motor yachts
  • Expansive forward trampoline nets and wide open cockpits
Cons
  • Slower cruising speeds than planing monohulls
  • Wide beam limits available docking slips in crowded marinas
  • Less enclosed air-conditioned interior volume than motor yachts

Open Decks & Shallow Draft · 10 in this fleet

Center Consoles & Day Boats

Center consoles and modern day boats: fast outboard power, walkaround decks, and drafts shallow enough to nose into sandbar water. They are the cheapest way into a private captained boat for a small group. Cabin space is minimal; the day happens outside.

Pros
  • Lowest charter price point in the Miami captained fleet
  • Shallow draft navigates directly into waist-deep sandbar water
  • Fast, agile transit along Intracoastal channels
Cons
  • Minimal or no enclosed air-conditioned cabin space
  • Limited shade during intense South Florida midday sun
  • Smaller guest counts than motor yachts (8 to 13 on these listings)

Large-Group & Event Vessels charter example
USCG COI Certified · 13 to 600 Passengers · 3 in this fleet

Large-Group & Event Vessels

Past 12 guests, federal law requires a vessel holding a USCG Certificate of Inspection (COI). This fleet has exactly three: a 125-guest sailing vessel, a 140-guest ship and a 600-guest event vessel. They are the only legal way to put a big group on one boat in Miami.

Pros
  • Only legal charter option for groups exceeding 12 passengers
  • Dedicated commercial marine crew and deckhand staff
  • Event infrastructure including commercial audio and bar setups
Cons
  • Substantially higher baseline charter rates and crew overhead
  • Less intimate atmosphere than private recreational motor yachts
  • Longer booking lead times required for commercial vessel dispatch

COMMONLY ASKED

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a motor yacht and an express cruiser?+
An express cruiser (typically 35–45ft) features a single-level open cockpit and a cuddy cabin below. A motor yacht or flybridge yacht (usually 50ft+) includes an elevated upper driving bridge, separated interior salon, multiple staterooms, and significantly more formal entertaining space.
Why are catamarans considered better for guests prone to seasickness?+
Catamarans have two parallel hulls spaced wide apart, which provides substantial natural roll resistance. They stay significantly flatter in light cross-chops compared to deep-V monohull yachts.
Are fuel costs higher on large motor yachts compared to catamarans?+
Yes. High-performance planing motor yachts burn significantly more diesel when cruising on plane. Sailing catamarans and displacement powercats cruise at modest speeds and burn a fraction of the fuel.
Can I rent an uninspected yacht for 14 people if we pay extra?+
No. Federal maritime regulations strictly limit uninspected passenger vessels (UPVs) to 12 passengers plus crew. Groups of 13 or more must book a USCG Certificate of Inspection (COI) vessel or arrange a two-boat tandem charter.
